what is the common refrigerant used in absorption refrigeration machines

IIR-2 Equipment, Design and Installation of Ammonia Mechanical Refrigerating Systems Fluorocarbon Refrigerants Handbook - Ralph C. Downing, Prentice-Hall Trade-Offs in Refrigerant Selections: Past, Present, and Future - James M. Calm and David A. Didion - Proceedings of ASHRAE/NIST Refrigerants Conference - Oct 1997 R-22 is an CFC refrigerant. The science of refrigeration has had a long and interesting journey. From ice harvesting in ancient China in 1000 BC to commercial cooling in present times, whole civilizations and generations of scientists have endeavored to achieve and master artificial cooling by manipulating matter and energy. It is also an HFC refrigerant. Refrigerants are used in various building equipment including air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, walk-in coolers, etc. Ammonia is commonly used as the refrigerant liquid. Contrary to compression refrigeration machines, which need high-quality electric energy to run, ammonia–water absorption refrigeration machines use low-quality thermal energy. Unlike mechanical-compression refrigeration systems, which typically use R-22 and R-410A for refrigerants, absorption refrigeration systems use refrigerants that other substances are attracted to and absorb. Refrigerant Effects on the Environment Many refrigerants are known to have a negative effect on the environment because they contribute to global warming and they deplete the ozone layer. R-22 was the primary Refrigerant used for home and commercial units but was banned due to the harm it caused to the O-Zone layer. The most common combinations are ammonia (refrigerant) with water (absorbent), and water (refrigerant) with lithium bromide (absorbent). For example, residential HVAC chillers often use ammonia as the refrigerant and water as the absorbent. Absorption Refrigeration Absorption refrigeration produces its refrigerating effect by evaporating a refrigerant, which is then absorbed into solution in a suitable liquid. It is mostly used with the Vapour absorption refrigeration cycle like ice plants, cold storage, packing plants, etc. The concentrated solution is pumped to high pressure and the refrigerant driven out of solution by heat, to be condensed at the higher pressure in a condenser. The compressor is replaced by the absorber and the generator in the absorption refrigeration system. Th e different types of Uses – It is widely used in large industrial and commercial refrigeration systems. In an absorption refrigerator, a suitable combination of refrigerant and absorbent is used. The absorption refrigeration cycle is used in both small and large air-conditioning equipment. Absorption refrigeration is a useful cooling technology that has not enjoyed the widespread acceptance and use of compression refrigeration.Absorption refrigeration seems counterintuitive because it is cooling driven by a heat source. At first the refrigerant are condensed in the condenser and it gets evaporated in the evaporator. The boiling point of refrigerant NH3, is lower than that of the absorbing liquid H2O, hence the vapours leaving the generator are predominantly those of refrigerant. The vapor absorption refrigeration system comprises of all the processes in the vapor compression refrigeration system like compression, condensation, expansion and evaporation. The refrigerants used in the vapor absorption system are ammonia, water and lithium bromide. In the vapor absorption system the refrigerant used is ammonia, water or lithium bromide. It is an HFC refrigerant as well. This clinic, however, focuses on large water-chiller applications of the absorption cycle. Then the refrigerant starts cooling process in evaporator and releases the heat to the atmosphere via the condenser. Absorption water chillers make use of the absorption refrigeration cycle and do not use a mechanical compressor. It was replaced by R-410A in 2010. Properties – Highly toxic, flammable, good thermal properties, highest refrigerating effect per kg of refrigerant. Adsorption cycle This is in contrast to compression refrigeration, where the most common refrigerant … Types of Refrigerants Used In Air Conditioning. R-404A is primarily used transport refrigeration. 2) CO2 (Carbon dioxide)
